Your A/C system has service ports (the connection points used to service and recharge the system). Inside each service port is a small sealing component called a valve core, similar in concept to a tire valve core.

After an A/C component is replaced condenser, compressor, hose, expansion valve, accumulator/receiver-drier, the system has usually been opened. Once a system is opened, air and moisture can enter, and the system can no longer be treated like a normal “quick recharge.”

When your car A/C isn’t cooling well, the most common impulse is: “Just recharge it.” Sometimes that seems to help, briefly. But if the system is low because it’s leaking, a recharge becomes a temporary patch, and you may end up paying for refrigerant more than once.

The Most Frustrating A/C Problem: It Works… Until It Doesn’t. Few car problems are as annoying as inconsistent A/C. One day it feels fine. The next day it’s weak. Sometimes it blows cold while you’re driving, then turns warm at a stoplight. Or it’s cold at idle and gets worse on the highway.

It Looks Like the Same Job. But It Isn’t. If your car’s A/C starts blowing warmer, the most common thought is: “It’s probably low, let me add a little.” That logic became popular in the R-134a era because DIY kits were everywhere. But with modern vehicles using R-1234yf, the “quick top-off” approach becomes riskier, more expensive, and less forgiving.

“More Oil Must Be Better,” Right? Not in an A/C System. When your car A/C isn’t blowing cold, a lot of DIY advice pushes the same idea: “Add refrigerant and add a little oil while you’re at it to protect the compressor.”
